As my photography progresses I look to fill every free minute with a shooting morning.  Not every morning co-operates.  Wind, rain and lately a lot of gray skies can put a damper on wave photography.  Colorless gray skies convert to colorless gray water and waves.  My favorite photography are mornings with the sunrises that have color and shining sun.  Dull green water does nothing for me.  But with the purchase of a drone, I think I have found the right combination on filling each morning I can wake up (the key is waking up) whether cloudy, windy, big surf or small surf.

With big surf I break out the long lens and tripod and head down to “The Wedge” in Newport Beach or the Huntington Beach pier.  Smaller surf it is the aquatech water housing and shooting from Salt Creek, Seal Beach, Rock pile or newly found Aliso Creek Beach.   On gray mornings or not so gray but choppy surf it’s the DJI Mavic Pro Drone. This has given me the trifecta of wave photography.  Shore, water or air.  Multiple perspectives and really bringing along my wave abstracts and motion.

At the end of the day, you set the alarm, plan out your attack on the beach and know that the next morning you have a given yourself a better percentage of capturing a piece of art.
